A Reflection on My Five-Year Letter
I wrote a "Dear Me in Five Years" letter on 19 August 2016. I was 26 then—perhaps still naive or unaware of the people and things around me.
Now, 8 years, 5 months, and 22 days later, I'd like to quickly review my letter, reflecting on major updates and changes in my life.
Feel free to reach out if you've written similar letters to yourself and how they have influenced your life today. I'd love to hear your stories.
How has life been for you? Have you figured everything out?
I would like to think that my life is in order now. I am married to a wonderful husband and I have two children who never fail to light up our world in their most unconventional ways. I’m exactly where I’ve dreamed of being in my career—it's the right balance.
Do you still suffer from terrible acne? Oh, I hope the psoriasis is still in stable condition.
My facial issues have greatly improved, though the psoriasis remains. Thankfully, I now have a better understanding of how to manage it. With a chronic condition, a bit of acceptance goes a long way.
Perhaps you have a pretty cosy house with soft bed linens and dim lighting.
I do. We signed for the house in 2019, just before prices surged due to COVID.
Have you been promoted to the First Impression Officer (FIO) position? It’s something you’ve been looking forward to! Unless you’ve jumped to another bank!
After becoming a mother, I left retail banking in search of a more flexible and less stressful career.
How about studies? Did you try to do another degree?
After struggling with my Banking & Finance double degree, I decided not to pursue it further. Even now, I still feel it’s unnecessary. However, if the need arises, I might reconsider.
How’s your camera collection going? Are you still using the Fuji System? Perhaps get a few lenses already?
I’m still loyal to the Fujifilm X-Series system. Since 2016, I’ve purchased several prime lenses and upgraded my camera body in 2021. I’ve let go of most of my cameras that I kept solely for collection. Other than the Fujifilm camera, the only one that remains is the Nikon L35AF film camera.
Did you continue to take up piano lessons? Or you couldn’t commit to the classes?
I didn’t continue my piano hobby, as I had no way to practice and probably not much interest left.
How’s your family dear? I hope everyone is doing okay. Mama, Papa, Nenek, and especially Yayi. If he is no longer in this temporary world, my prayers go out to him.
My grandfather, Yayi, passed away just 18 days after I wrote this letter. He succumbed to colon and lung cancer after battling it for approximately three years.
How are your friends? Are you still as close to D, A and S?
Yes, we still hang out often. As of today, I've known them for nearly twenty years. Our get-together activities are more laid back now—most times we take turns dozing off on the sofa when it gets really late.
What about J?
Unfortunately, we no longer speak. Despite repeatedly inviting him over, he never showed up, and our friendship became one-sided. He made no effort to reach out, despite my continuous attempts. After a couple of years, I chose to step back.
Anyway, I just want to remind you that no matter what challenges you face, please be positive and stay focused on finding the solution rather than mulling over the problem.
I am happy to report that I am more mindful in dealing with daily problems now.
Lastly, enjoy every moment and embrace your loved ones. Keep taking photos for keepsake cause that’s what makes you happy! Have a good day ahead, and enjoy being 31!
I still enjoy taking photos for keepsake purposes, just as much as I did eight years ago. When I was 31, I spent the first half of the year being pregnant with my second child. I ate a lot of shaved ice dessert and played countless ukulele songs. I spent the other half learning to manage a newborn and a two-year old. I wouldn't say it was a lot of fun, but it surely was rewarding and enlightening.
