My Son's 3rd Seizure Episode

I was in the train back home when I received a short text from my husband.

My husband: Adik¹ fits.

The first thing I realised was how helpless I was being in that train cabin because there was nothing that I can do to help the situation at home. I was at Khatib when the text came in. If i were to alight and grab a cab, I might reach later than I had intended. I quickly replied back.

Me: Video. Call ambulance.

Me: Ambulance coming? Check temp now.

The next thing I did, I view our CCTV live mode. Poor little boy on the bed in my room. I can see his body making small little jerky movements and his hands all curled up into fists. After a while, the fits manage to slow down and I can hear my helper telling my husband that it is stopping. However, I noticed that both his legs are still straight and tensed. I call my husband to tell him that his body is still in fits mode. I watched the CCTV until I alighted at Admiralty. I tried so very hard to take big strides and walk faster. Thankfully, when I reached the bus stop, 913 was already there. As soon as I reached our stop, I ran as fast as I could towards our block. The last update I got from my husband was that they are about to enter the elevator. I only managed to run around the corner of the school, till I had to stop running else we’d probably need another ambulance for me. From afar, I can see M and P standing at the back of the ambulance. M noticed me, she might have told the officers that I’d arrived. When I reach the ambulance, my husband and son were already inside the ambulance and my son was wailing with tears streaming down his cheeks. I swapped places with my husband and put my son to rest on my chest and whispered words of comfort to him. Gradually, he stopped crying and fell into a deep sleep. I’m thankful that I managed to reach in time so that he has me for comfort when he goes through the triage and other medical necessities.

It was 7 PM by the time we reached the hospital. My son woke up and the first words that came out of his mouth were, “Lights!”. It was the reflection of the ambulance lights. I immediately felt better knowing that he is okay. We were immediately brought into the observation area. His temperature was 39 when the nurse took it and he was administered ibuprofen. I stepped out of the A&E awhile to get some snacks for us. I bought some bread and biscuits for him. After I fed him a couple of mouthfuls, he vomited in my hands. I managed to catch most of his vomit. After food and a few YouTube videos, my son was himself again. The doctor assessed him and discharged him at about 9.30 PM. We were only to come back if he were to have fits again in the next 24 hours. Albeit this was his third febrile fits episode, it will always feel like the first. I’m glad I did not put my guard down. It has been a long time since it happened and we thought that it might not occur again. But alas, it did, when we were least expecting it. This was a lesson for us to never take chances. Always prepare that hospital bag when he is falling ill.
