WeekNotes #2
Matt Murray shot a roll of expired Fujicolor Industrial 100 film and shared it in his Substack. It instantly caught my interest when this came into my inbox. I remembered how much I love the muted colours of this film. It is unfortunate that it has been discontinued since 2020.
This excerpt from The Wrong Daughter by Dandy Smith made me wish I was there too with the protagonist.
St Ives is gorgeous. It’s all quaint ice-cream parlours and bakeries, seafront art galleries and winding cobbled streets. I spend an hour in the St Ives Bookseller and come out with a bagful of paperbacks. We check into the most beautiful cottage before going for a walk around the town, ducking in and out of bookshops and art galleries and boutiques. We share a newspaper bouquet of salty chips and sit on a bench overlooking the beach. A breeze rolls across the sea and for the first time in weeks, I don’t feel like I’m breathing in the arid air of an open oven.
- These photos are of ordinary scenes you might see anywhere but it was captured beautifully by Yasumi Toyoda. I enjoy mundane shots like these. Especially more if the surrounding colours coordinated well with each other.
Someone asked me, why I prefer emails over a chat platform. I thought that with email, I could write with intent and craft a more thoughtful message or reply. It also doesn't demand my attention and has a slower pace, as compared to a chat.
I intentionally went to a flea market last week but I was dampened to see all the items that were displayed, or rather, piled into luggages placed on the floor. Not only was it difficult to browse through but it was also messy, made worse by the patrons rummaging through the items.
I find the lack of courtesy among our commuters discouraging. With so many people around us on the train, a little courtesy and consideration from everyone would make it a much better mode of transport.
- Some of the food I ate, aside from home-cooked meals, included martabak manis, melted cheese gyudon, fried prawn wanton, ayam percik, otah cuttlefish ball and Thai banana fritters.
- I cooked a new dish and the kids loved it: hotdogs cooked in egg and cheese placed over warm, buttered rice and served with seasoned seaweed.
- I re-watched most of Adam Sandler's movies, my favourite being Blended and 50 First Dates.
